Two Attic Water Heaters Replaced with One Tankless Water Heater in Heather Ridge Estates, Frisco TX
Project Location: Heather Ridge Estates, Frisco, Texas
GPS Plumbing recently removed two existing attic tank water heaters from this Heather Ridge Estates home and installed one A. O. Smith ATHR-199X3 natural gas tankless water heater in their place.
This page documents the specific work performed on this Frisco plumbing project, the equipment removed, the new system installed, and the plumbing and gas modifications required for the conversion.
The Project
The home originally had two gas tank-style water heaters installed in the attic. The homeowners wanted to replace the two-tank setup with one properly sized tankless system.
Scope of work completed for this Heather Ridge Estates job:
- Removal of both existing attic water heaters
- Installation of an A. O. Smith ATHR-199X3 tankless water heater
- New tankless isolation and service valves
- Hot and cold water piping modifications
- Connection to the home’s existing hot-water recirculation system
- Thermal expansion tank installation
- New gas sediment trap and gas connection
- New intake and exhaust venting
- Proper termination of water lines no longer needed after converting from two tanks to one tankless system
A. O. Smith ATHR-199X3 Installation
The new A. O. Smith ATHR-199X3 is a 199,000-BTU condensing natural gas tankless water heater with an integrated recirculation pump.
Replacing the two large storage tanks with one wall-mounted tankless unit created a much more compact mechanical setup in the attic.
Tankless systems still require routine maintenance. GPS Plumbing recommends a yearly tankless water heater flush and inspection, with maintenance needs adjusted for water quality, usage and manufacturer recommendations.
Considering a Similar Tankless Conversion?
Not every home is a good candidate for replacing two tank water heaters with one tankless unit. Proper sizing depends on factors including gas capacity, venting, plumbing configuration and peak hot-water demand. Water heater projects may also require permitting and inspection. Homeowners can review current requirements through the City of Frisco residential permit information.
